Uncle
Tom’s Cabin(1852) by Harriet Beecher Stowe was considered the most
controversial book during its time and many believe it was the cause of the
Civil War. Stowe was an abolitionist and wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin to show the
gruesome treatment of slaves in the south. The story revolves around a slave
named Tom and he is sold to many different slave owners throughout his life and
ends with his death. The brutality of the book gave insight on the poor
treatment of the slaves in the south and abolition of slavery needed to be
done. The south became more angered because of the book’s over-exaggerated
story and stereotyping the southern slaveholders as awful beings.
